One Feared Trapped After Four-Storey Building Collapses in Kisumu

A tragic building collapse in the Tom Mboya Estate, around the vicinity of the Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) site in Kisumu City, has led to the death of one individual, while others have been left seriously injured.

The tragedy happened on Monday evening of May 12, 2026, when rescue attempts were initiated amid fears that there could still be more casualties trapped under the collapsed building.

The storey building is said to have collapsed after heavy rains fell in Kisumu and neighboring regions.

One individual is said to have been trapped under the building almost immediately after its collapse, leading to rescue attempts by the relevant parties, including the county, firefighters, policemen, disaster management experts, and local residents.

Increase in Rescue Operations

The rescue teams acted quickly and began searching through the debris for survivors.

Local inhabitants also became involved in the process, clearing rubble by hand as the rescue team raced against time to ascertain whether anyone else was trapped inside the fallen building.

It was discovered that one individual had succumbed to death in the process, while others were left injured.

The injured survivor was pulled out of the rubble and immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention as rescue efforts carried on into the night.

The identity of the dead individual was revealed to be a caretaker who was allegedly on duty at the construction site before the building’s collapse.

Cordon Around The Area

Security personnel cordoned off the area around the collapsed building in order to allow rescue personnel to work uninterrupted while preventing other members of the public from being at risk.

Many people, including those who wish to offer their support, assembled in the vicinity of the collapsed building.

It is claimed that the building was under construction when it collapsed.

It remains uncertain why the collapse happened since initial reports indicate that it may have been caused by heavy rainfall in the city of Kisumu yesterday.
