The Social Health Authority has released a step-by-step guide for members to add children as dependents on their health cover, urging Kenyans to update their profiles online through the http://afyayangu.go.ke portal.
SHA said members must log into the portal, navigate to “My Profile,” and select the “Dependents” option to begin the process.
From there, users can click “Add Dependents” and choose one of three categories: Child, Child (Adopted), or Child Loco Parentis.
For children below 18 years, the system requires members to enter the child’s date of birth and upload either a birth certificate or birth notification, or an adoption certificate where applicable.

SHA also requires a passport photo of the child to complete the registration.
Students aged 18 to 24 must first register as SHA members in their own right before parents can add them as dependents.
Members use the Add Child, above 18 option to link these students to their cover once individual registration is complete.
“The system will send a one-time password to the member’s registered phone number for verification; Members must enter the OTP and click submit to finalize the addition of a dependent.” Stated SHA.
The authority advised members who encounter challenges to visit their nearest County SHA office for in-person assistance moreover, SHA listed its toll-free line 147 for further enquiries.

Officials said accurate dependent records will help ensure families access benefits without delays when seeking medical services.
SHA operates from its headquarters at the SHA Building on Ragati Road in Nairobi’s Community area and the authority maintains a public website at http://www.sha.go.ke and runs verified accounts on Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube for updates.
Officials urged members to verify details carefully before submission to avoid processing errors that could affect claims.
