Share

President Samia Suluhu held talks with Dangote Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Aliko Dangote at the State House in Dar es Salaam on May 16, 2026, where the two discussed expanding investment opportunities in Tanzania.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Tanzanian government and Dangote Group in sectors including energy, manufacturing, ports, gas, fertilizer, and infrastructure.

Dangote praised the Tanzanian government for improving the business environment and addressing challenges facing investors in the country.

He said government interventions had helped improve operations at the Dangote Cement plant in Mtwara, boosting efficiency and strengthening the company’s confidence in Tanzania as a strategic investment destination in Africa.

“I want to sincerely thank you for addressing many of the challenges affecting our investment at the Mtwara Cement Plant. When you came into office, we faced many challenges, but as you promised, every challenge has been resolved properly,” said Dangote.

Dangote Group Introduces Gas-Powered Trucks

Dangote Group has already brought 400 trucks powered by natural gas into Tanzania to support the transportation and distribution of cement across the country.

The trucks are part of a wider plan to convert 700 company trucks to use cleaner energy in a move aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing operating costs.

Cement Production Near Target

Dangote said the Mtwara cement factory continues to perform well and is expected to produce about 2.8 million tonnes this year, close to its target of 3.2 million tonnes.

“We are doing very well. I must thank you, Madam President, for your leadership because without your leadership, the market would not have been productive enough for us to operate at this scale,” he said.

Talks Focus on Major Oil Refinery Project

The discussions also explored the possibility of a partnership between Dangote Group and the Tanzanian government in a crude oil refinery project estimated to cost about 17 billion US dollars.

According to Dangote, the project would benefit East African countries and Ethiopia and could allow regional nations to participate through share ownership.

He said the refinery would help Africa increase its ability to produce petroleum products locally, reduce dependence on imports, and protect countries from global price and supply disruptions.

Samia Invites More Investment

President Samia assured Dangote of continued cooperation and encouraged the businessman to explore more investment opportunities in Tanzania that would benefit investors, the government, and the country as a whole.

She also invited Dangote Group to invest in fertilizer production, noting that demand for fertilizer in Tanzania remains higher than the country’s current production capacity.

“Aliko Dangote is one of the biggest investors in Tanzania, where his cement factory (Dangote Cement) in Mtwara Region is boosting our economy through the cement business, creating jobs for Tanzanians, and supporting related sectors,” she added
