Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei sharply criticised Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro over his request to recall the National Assembly from recess to debate proposals aimed at reducing fuel prices.
In a strongly worded statement, Cherargei argued that Nyoro lacks the legal authority under the Standing Orders to request a special sitting of the National Assembly.
The senator stated that only the Majority Leader or Minority Leader can formally write to the Speaker to convene a special sitting of the House.
According to Cherargei, Standing Order No. 29 clearly outlines who can initiate the process of recalling Parliament during recess.
“Under the National Assembly Standing Orders No. 29, it is only either the Majority Leader or Minority Leader who can write to the Speaker to convene a special sitting of the National Assembly to discuss any matter,” Cherargei stated.
He further accused Nyoro of “playing to the gallery” instead of following the proper parliamentary process.
“From the foregoing, the Kiharu MP does not have an iota of moving the National Assembly special sitting, but he is just playing to the gallery or the whims of hopeless sycophants,” he added.

Cherargei also accused Nyoro of being inconsistent on fuel taxation issues.
The senator said Nyoro previously supported fuel tax measures while serving as Chairperson of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee.
“The Kiharu MP is a hypocrite of the highest order because he is the immediate chairman of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee, where he moved the National Assembly to pass 16 percent VAT on fuel products in 2024,” Cherargei claimed.
Nyoro recently proposed several measures to reduce fuel prices, including removing VAT on petroleum products, reducing the Road Maintenance Levy, and introducing a diesel subsidy.

The debate comes as Kenyans continue to face high fuel prices amid global market pressures and tensions linked to the Middle East crisis involving the United States.
Cherargei argued that the government is already working on measures to cushion Kenyans from the rising cost of fuel.
“Now the government is coming up with options of cushioning Kenyans from the high cost of fuel caused by the escalation of the Middle East crisis with the USA,” he stated.
Nyoro had earlier written to Speaker Moses Wetangula requesting that the House be recalled to urgently discuss amendments aimed at lowering fuel prices across the country.
The Speaker’s office has not yet publicly responded to the request.
