Teenage Girl Found Dead in Nakuru in Suspected Jiko Fume Tragedy

A 15-year-old girl died on Friday, May 15, morning in Uplands Village, Salgaa after police suspect she inhaled carbon monoxide fumes from a burning charcoal stove inside her rented room.

Police received the report about the incident at 9:03 am morning and rushed to the scene, where they found the girl lying on the floor.

Two of the girl’s younger siblings, who are four and seven years old, survived the incident and were rescued alive with the police team.

The two children were taken to Rongai Dispensary for immediate medical attention.

Teenager Dies from Suspected Charcoal Stove Fumes

Investigators and police officers visited and processed the scene where the incident occurred.

Police found the body of the 15-year-old at the scene and transported it to the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.

“Police suspect the teenager succumbed to suffocation after inhaling fumes from a charcoal stove which had been used inside the house overnight,” the Authorities stated.

The mortuary document was processed by the police officers, and then the body was transferred to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital Mortuary.

Police stated that the children’s mother was not at home when the incident happened, and they did not disclose her identity.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning from Indoor Fuel Burning

Police are investigating how the jiko was put inside the house with the children.

The authorities are warning the public about the dangers of carbon monoxide, which they termed the ” silent killer since the colorless, odorless gas is formed when wood or charcoal is burned in a poorly ventilated area, and it combines with the hemoglobin in the blood to form carboxyhaemoglobin.

Authorities stated that this deadly gas prevents oxygen from traveling in the body, and poisoning occurs when you breathe in carbon monoxide fumes making you feel dizzy, have a headache, and lose consciousness.

The postmortem report for the deceased’s body is expected, with investigations still ongoing.
