Football Stars Set to Miss 2026 World Cup
Share
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be remembered for being expanded to include a total of 48 teams. It will also go down in history for the many world-class football players who will not participate in the cup that is set to take place in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
While the tournament format has been expanded to cater to more nations, some star names have found themselves left out due to failed qualification processes, injury problems, tactical considerations, and even poor performances in their respective national teams.
Some of those who will miss out on this year’s biggest football competition include Nigerian strikers Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Italian defenders Gianluigi Donnarumma and Sandro Tonali, Polish captain Robert Lewandowski, as well as English stars Phil Foden and Cole Palmer.
World Cup Qualification Failures Leave Major Nations Behind
Nigeria’s failure to qualify stands out as one of the biggest disappointments of the qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles fell short after a play-off defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, leaving Osimhen and Lookman out of the tournament despite both players enjoying strong club careers in Europe.
Georgia winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also misses out after his country failed to progress from a difficult qualifying group featuring Spain and Turkey.
Serbia striker Dusan Vlahovic will similarly watch from home after Serbia dropped crucial points during qualification.
Italy’s continued struggles on the international stage have extended into another cycle after the four-time world champions failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
Goalkeeper Donnarumma and midfielder Tonali become two of the most high-profile casualties of Italy’s prolonged decline.
Poland also fell short after a narrow play-off defeat to Sweden, denying Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski what could have been one of their final opportunities to appear at a World Cup.
Denmark suffered similar heartbreak after losing on penalties in the play-off final, leaving Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen absent from the competition.
Ukraine midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko misses out after his country was eliminated in the play-offs, while Jamaica narrowly failed to secure a historic qualification following defeat in the intercontinental play-off final, ending Leon Bailey’s hopes of appearing at the tournament.
Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not feature after his nation exited in the African play-offs.
Chile’s Alexis Sanchez also misses out after Chile endured a disastrous campaign that saw them finish bottom of their qualifying group.
Slovakia defender Milan Skriniar, Greece striker Vangelis Pavlidis, Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo and Kosovo striker Vedat Muriqi are among established internationals who will not travel to North America.

England Squad Decisions Spark Debate
While some players missed out through failed qualification campaigns, England manager Thomas Tuchel’s squad announcement created fresh controversy after several established stars were excluded from the Three Lions squad.
The German coach made a series of high-profile selections and omissions ahead of the World Cup, leaving behind several experienced internationals and Premier League standouts.
Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was overlooked despite regular appearances during his loan spell at Newcastle.
Defender Lewis Hall also failed to make the cut, despite being a regular performer for Newcastle throughout the season.
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill’s hopes were damaged by a serious ACL injury suffered earlier in the campaign.
Although he returned to fitness before the FA Cup final, Tuchel opted against including him in the final squad.
The fact that Harry Maguire was not included attracted a lot of attention following the comments from Maguire himself about his omission.
Maguire is one of the players who have been in the English team in numerous international competitions.
Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was another notable absentee after an inconsistent season in Spain.
Tuchel instead selected Reece James and Tino Livramento in the full-back positions.
Midfielders Adam Wharton and James Garner also missed out despite impressive domestic campaigns.
Garner’s omission attracted particular interest after Tuchel previously compared him to Uruguay and Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.

Palmer And Foden Among England’s Biggest Omissions
Chelsea forward Cole Palmer and Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden emerged as arguably the most surprising exclusions from England’s squad.
Palmer endured an inconsistent season affected by injuries and fluctuating club form, although he still managed 10 goals and three assists in all competitions.
However, England’s depth in attacking positions ultimately counted against him.
Foden’s omission came after a difficult season with Manchester City, during which he struggled for regular starts and failed to maintain his previous levels of performance.
His lack of Premier League goals since December contributed to Tuchel’s decision.
Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin also narrowly missed out despite scoring 14 Premier League goals for Leeds this season.
Jarrod Bowen, who registered eight goals and 10 assists for West Ham, was similarly left out despite strong individual performances.
Beyond England, other confirmed absentees include Brazil forward Rodrygo, Germany winger Serge Gnabry, France striker Hugo Ekitiké, Netherlands midfielder Xavi Simons and Brazil defender Éder Militão.
France midfielder Eduardo Camavinga and Brazil striker João Pedro were also not selected by their respective national teams despite strong club reputations.
