FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Picture Takes Shape as Golden Boot Race Intensifies

The race for the adidas Golden Boot has become even tighter as the FIFA World Cup 2026 enters the quarter-final stage, with several of football’s biggest stars still in contention for the tournament’s top individual scoring prize.
France forward Kylian Mbappé has moved to the top of the standings with seven goals, edging ahead on FIFA’s tiebreaker after matching the goal tallies of his closest rivals.
Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland are also on seven goals each, keeping the Golden Boot race wide open as Argentina and Norway remain in the tournament.
England captain Harry Kane is close behind with six goals, while France winger Ousmane Dembélé, England midfielder Jude Bellingham, Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal and Brazil star Vinícius Júnior have each scored four goals.
Mbappé currently leads the Golden Boot standings because FIFA uses assists as the first tiebreaker when players are level on goals.

Creative Assist Players in the World Cup Tournament
While the Golden Boot race has grabbed much of the spotlight, several players have also stood out for their creativity and ability to create goals for teammates.
France winger Michael Olise currently leads the tournament with five assists, underlining his importance in France’s run to the quarter-finals.
Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães and Morocco playmaker Brahim Díaz are tied in second place with four assists each.
Sweden forward Alexander Isak and Norway captain Martin Ødegaard have each provided three assists, playing key roles in their teams’ attacking displays.
As the knockout rounds continue, the race for the tournament’s top playmaker remains wide open, with several of football’s biggest stars still in contention to finish as the leading assist provider at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
