Ambrose Rachier Biography

Ambrose Rachier is one of Kenya’s most renowned lawyers and football administrators.

He is best known for serving as the chairman of Gor Mahia Football Club, a position he has held since May 8, 2008.

Born on December 1, 1949, Rachier has built a successful legal career spanning more than four decades while also playing a key role in transforming Gor Mahia into one of the most successful football clubs in East Africa.

Education and Legal Career

Rachier is the founder and Senior Partner at Rachier & Amollo Advocates LLP, a law firm he runs together with Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo.

His academic achievements include a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Arts in Translation from the University of Nairobi, and a Diploma in French from the University of Madagascar.

In 2022, he earned another Master’s degree in Bioethics from Trinity International University and is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of South Africa.

As an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with more than 40 years of experience, Rachier specialises in Conveyancing and Commercial and Corporate Law.

He is widely known for handling property transactions, corporate agreements, banking deals and legal consultancy services across East Africa.

He also played a major role in reviewing Kenya’s land laws to align them with the 2010 Constitution.

Beyond legal practice, Rachier has served in various national and international committees dealing with medical ethics, health law, and HIV/AIDS policy.

He also lectures at Strathmore University.

Transforming Gor Mahia

Rachier officially became Gor Mahia chairman in 2008 and has since become the club’s longest-serving chairman.

When he took over, Gor Mahia had gone 13 years without winning the league title. Under his leadership, the club returned to the top and established a period of dominance in Kenyan football.

During his tenure, Gor Mahia has won:

  • 10 Kenyan Premier League titles (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2024 and 2025/26)
  • 4 FKF Cups
  • 6 Kenyan Super Cups
  • 2 KPL Top 8 titles

One of the club’s greatest achievements came in 2015 when Gor Mahia won the league title without losing a single match.

Rachier also guided the club back to continental football, helping Gor Mahia reach the CAF Confederation Cup group stage in 2018 and later the quarter-finals during the 2018/19 season, the club’s best performance in Africa in decades.

He further strengthened the club financially by securing sponsorship deals with companies such as Tuzo and SportPesa.

In 2019, he oversaw constitutional reforms aimed at improving the club’s governance and administration.

Family Life

Rachier is married and has seven children from two families.

He has five children from his first marriage and two from his second family.

His firstborn son, Alvin, followed in his footsteps and works as an advocate at his father’s law firm.

His fourth-born child, Beryl, is an advocate in the High Court of Australia and has received several awards in her legal career.

His second-born child is a doctor, while his third-born son works as a banker in Australia. His fifth-born son is a journalist.

In his second family, his son studies Business Administration at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, while his daughter is a student at Brookhouse School.

Freemasonry and Religious Beliefs

In 2022, Rachier publicly confirmed that he is a member of the Freemasons and that he is a fellow at the Nairobi Freemason Lodge along Nyerere Road, near State House, during an interview with NTV Kenya.

According to Rachier, he joined Freemasonry in 1994 after being introduced by two close friends. He then underwent the required vetting process before being accepted into the society.

He has stated that he has been a member for more than three decades and is considered a senior member of the organisation in Kenya.

Ambrose Rachier Net Worth

Although his exact net worth is not publicly known, Rachier has built wealth through his legal career and investments.

He is a co-founder and long-serving board director of Mayfair Insurance Company, one of Kenya’s leading locally owned insurance firms.

Rachier also held shares in Mayfair Bank. In 2023, he and other investors sold their remaining 49% stake in the bank to Egypt’s Commercial International Bank in a deal valued at approximately Ksh 5 billion.
