How to Apply for HELB Top-Funding Loan
Share
Applications for Top-Up Loans have been opened by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) in order to help continuing students fill tuition gaps and for living costs.
These loans give students, who have already been awarded a loan but are short of money following increased fees, more cash.
Students applying for Top-Up Loans must first possess an existing HELB loan, and there must be a visible financial gap, either due to increasing tuition fees or living expenses.
“Applicants should pursue their studies at a recognized Kenyan university, college, or TVET institution, and they must not be in arrears with any of their repayments.” Stated the board.
To avoid delays in processing, students need to ensure all the relevant documents are in place before the application.
Applicants are expected to bring along a copy of their National Identity Card and admission or registration letter from their academic institution.
An up-to-date fee statement showing the outstanding balance required should also be included to demonstrate the financial gap.

Other copies required are a parent’s or guardian’s National ID and their recent passport-sized photographs.
Bank account details from a recognized Kenyan bank are needed if applying for upkeep costs.
The entire process is undertaken online; students must log in to the website www.helb.co.ke, using their National ID and their password.
First-time applicants should create an account using their personal information, the institution’s information, their telephone number and their email address.
After successfully logging in to the system, the applicant is expected to go to the Loan Application, then Top-Up Loan.
The applicant is required to enter all necessary information in the online form without any errors.
“Students should enter full names, their ID numbers, date of birth, mobile and postal contact information, and postal and residential address details. They must ensure the details provided match those on their National ID.” Stated the board.

Students must enter the total fees, the amount received by the HELB loan, and the balance that is outstanding.
The fee statements and admission letter have to be uploaded to the system in the specified format.
Applicants must regularly check the status of their application in the section “Loan Status”. SMS and email notifications shall be sent from HELB, requiring more documentation if need be, or notifying applicants of the loan status (approval, rejection, disbursement).
