Britam Unveils New App as Environmental Initiative Creates 1,358 Jobs

Britam has unveiled a new digital platform dubbed Tawi that uses artificial intelligence to monitor and track trees planted under its environmental conservation programme, as the insurer revealed that its sustainability initiatives have created 1,358 green jobs across East Africa.

The platform was launched on Thursday, June 4, 2026, during the release of Britam’s 2025 Sustainability Report at Britam Towers in Nairobi.

Tawi will help the financial services firm keep records of trees planted under its ambitious target of planting 60 million trees by 2030, while also monitoring their health and survival rates.

Why Britam launched Tawi

Speaking during the launch, Britam Director, Legal, Sustainability, and Company Secretary, Hilda Njeru, said the company’s in-house software developers developed the platform to strengthen accountability and impact in environmental conservation efforts.

“Tawi, our digital platform that we will be unveiling today, was developed by our very own software developers to support the 60-million-trees initiative by keeping a record of the trees planted across our footprint and also help us track their health and survival rates,” Njeru said.

She noted that sustainability had become a core part of Britam’s operations across the seven African markets where it operates, with the company focusing on building systems and accountability mechanisms that embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into everyday business.

Britam’s Environmental Impact

According to the sustainability report, Britam’s environmental initiatives created 1,358 green jobs while helping plant more than 136,000 trees across East Africa between 2024 and 2025.

The company said its foundation supported more than 70 schools with water access projects and reached over 90,000 people through education, water, and environmental programmes.

Njeru highlighted several regional initiatives, including the planting of more than 10,000 trees in Rwanda and a partnership in South Sudan aimed at planting over 750,000 trees as part of the group’s wider conservation agenda.

New Sustainability Strategy

Britam Group Managing Director and CEO Tom Gitogo said sustainability has been integrated into the company’s new five-year ASCEND Strategy covering the period between 2026 and 2030.

“The S in ASCEND is sustainability and performance. This reflects how sustainability has become very deeply embedded in our business strategy, not as a standalone initiative but as a key driver of how we operate, innovate and grow,” Gitogo said.

He noted that the company continues to work with informal sector players, SMEs, SACCOs and community groups to expand access to insurance and financial protection products.

Other Key Achievements

Beyond its environmental efforts, Britam also recorded several achievements during the year.

The company said it sold more than 82,000 micro-insurance policies through digital platforms and partner channels, helping more people access insurance services.

Its digital platforms, including the Britam app and WhatsApp services, attracted over 87,000 active users, making it easier for customers to access insurance products.

Britam also worked with 169 local suppliers and spent more than Ksh 3 billion on goods and services, supporting local businesses and communities.

In addition, the solar power system installed at Britam Tower now provides more than half of the building’s electricity needs, helping cut carbon emissions by about 198 tonnes every year.
