AU Commission Raises Alarm Over Renewed US-Iran Escalation

The African Union (AU) Commission has raised concerns over the renewed escalation of attacks between the US and Iran, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting a peaceful resolution.
In a statement dated June 11, 2026 , the Commission warned that the latest developments risk further destabilising an already fragile situation and could threaten international peace and security.
“The African Union (AU) Commission expresses its deep concern over the renewed escalation of hostilities between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and advancing a peaceful resolution,” read part of the statement.
The AU also called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.
AU Commission Calls for Peaceful Resolution to Rising US-Iran Tensions
The commission further urged the US and Iran to recommit to dialogue and diplomacy, describing the negotiations as the only sustainable way toward resolving their differences and preventing further escalation.

Additionally , AU stressed on the importance of peaceful engagement adding that continued confrontation could result to extreme damage beyond the immediate region.
“The Commission calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from actions that could lead to further escalation, and recommit to dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable path to resolving differences,” AU stated.
The African Union added that ongoing instability in the Gulf region carries significant implications for Africa and disruptions in the Middle East could affect global energy markets, leading to increased transportation and commodity costs.
Meanwhile , the Commission reaffirmed its support for all diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and urged the international community to intensify efforts toward achieving a peaceful and negotiated settlement.
US-Iran Fight Continues Despite Ceasefire in April
This comes shortly hours after the US and Iran exchanged strikes across the Middle East for a second consecutive day, further straining a shaky ceasefire agreed between the two countries in April.

US Central Command (Centcom) said it had completed a wave of “self-defense strikes” targeting military, surveillance and radar sites in southern Iran, hours after President Donald Trump vowed US forces would hit Iran “hard”.
However, Tehran responded to the attack with a round of strikes targeting US military assets across the region in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
Iran’s foreign ministry said early on Thursday that the overnight attacks violated the two-month-old ceasefire, rendering it “practically meaningless”.
