Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death for Seven Bodies Found in Mwingi

Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into seven bodies exhumed from a suspected mass grave in Mwingi Town, Kitui County, after post-mortem examinations revealed how the victims died.

The autopsies, conducted on Tuesday, June 16, showed that two of the victims died from strangulation, while two others suffered fatal stab wounds to the abdomen.

Pathologists also established that the remaining three victims died after sustaining severe head injuries.

The findings have intensified concerns among residents and leaders as investigators work to identify the victims and establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The bodies were exhumed from different graves in an area near Kasina Primary School, where several other bodies have been discovered in recent weeks.

Residents have expressed growing fears over the repeated discoveries, with many believing the victims may have been killed elsewhere before their bodies were dumped in Mwingi.

“There are bodies of people who have been killed and dumped here in our town. It is like people are being murdered elsewhere and their bodies brought here,” a resident said.

“These incidents have been happening near Kasina Primary School, and as residents, we are worried because last month other bodies were also found near the same area,” another resident said.

Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu described the discoveries as disturbing and called for urgent investigations to determine what was happening in the area.

“There is a body there and there are other spots where we do not know whether there are more bodies buried. In the last four weeks, this is the fourth body to be recovered here. These are very disturbing incidents,” Kasalu said.

“Just the other day, we lost a young woman and we still do not know what happened. Apart from the female body that we know about, the other bodies are yet to be identified,” she added.

Police Appeal for Public Help

Police officers led by Mwingi Central Police Commander Antony Maina have urged families with missing relatives to report to authorities to assist with identification efforts.

“All the bodies are naked and have been buried in separate graves. If anyone has a missing relative, please report to the police,” Maina said.

The bodies, which were found at different stages of decomposition, remain at Mwingi General Hospital Mortuary awaiting identification and further investigations.
