IG Kanja Slapped with 6 Demands Ahead of June 25 Gen Z Memorial Protests

Inspector-General (IG) of Police Douglas Kanja has been presented with a letter containing six demands ahead of the planned nationwide Gen Z memorial protests scheduled for June 25, 2026.

The protests are expected to mark two years since dozens of young Kenyans lost their lives during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.

The letter was delivered by Vocal Africa Chief Executive Officer and activist Hussein Khalid alongside former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, activist Boniface Mwangi, lawyer and politician Gitobu Imanyara, and Siaya Senator James Orengo.

According to Khalid, the letter has already been received by the office of the Inspector-General.

“As families and citizens prepare for the peaceful march on June 25, 2026, this formal communication amplifies the call for justice and accountability for the lives lost during the 2024 Finance Bill protests,” Khalid said.

He added that the planned demonstrations seek justice for what the organisers described as “Gen Z Mashujaa” and urge the government to address the concerns raised by victims’ families.

The letter was written by Gillian Munyao and Chrisphine Odawa, the parents of Rex Masai, one of the young people who died during the protests.

In the letter dated June 18, 2026, the parents notified Kanja of a peaceful march to Parliament on June 25, where families, friends, and supporters will lay flowers in memory of those who died. Similar vigils and commemorations are expected to take place in all 47 counties.

Six Key Demands Presented to IG Kanja

Among the key demands is the call for investigations, arrests, and prosecution of police officers and commanders allegedly responsible for killings, torture, enforced disappearances, and other human rights violations during the 2024 protests.

The families are also demanding a formal public apology from the government for the deaths and alleged abuses committed by state agents.

In addition, they want June 25 declared a national holiday and a national monument established to honour those who died during the protests.

The families further called for meaningful consultation of victims and survivors on reparations, including efforts to restore livelihoods, trace missing persons, and provide other forms of redress.

They also demanded adequate and transparent compensation for survivors and families of those killed or reported missing.

The sixth demand calls for guarantees that similar incidents will never happen again. The families want police reforms, retraining of officers, and stronger oversight institutions, including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), to prevent future abuses.

The organisers have also urged police officers to respect Article 37 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to assemble, demonstrate, picket, and present petitions peacefully.
