The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced the arrest of three suspects linked to a violent attack on Chemelil Academy, which left staff members injured and caused extensive damage to school property.

The suspects, identified as Bernard Ouma, Thomas Onyango Ouma, and Walter Owa, alias Teddy Obul, were arrested following a manhunt launched after the attack that occurred on June 18, 2026.

In a statement dated June,19, DCI said police officers responded to a distress call reporting an ongoing attack at the school and found about 20 men armed with crude weapons fleeing in different directions upon arrival.

“Law enforcement officers from Muhoroni Sub-County have arrested three individuals linked to a brazen act of violence, where a gang stormed Chemelil Academy, leaving a trail of chaos and destruction,” DCI stated.

Detectives said some of the suspects escaped towards Achego while others disappeared into nearby sugarcane fields as officers moved in to contain the situation.

Upon entering the school compound, officers were met with a scene of destruction allegedly caused by the gang during the attack.

In addition, DCI  said the group stormed the institution and unleashed chaos, leaving both property and staff members affected.

According to detectives, the attackers forcefully gained entry into the administration block and vandalised the offices of the Principal and Deputy Principal.

The gang is also accused of assaulting members of staff before stealing 10 smartphones, cash, and other valuables from the school.

DCI also highlighted that injured staff members were rushed to Nyang’oma Sub-County Hospital for treatment, where they are currently receiving medical care and are in stable condition.

Detectives Intensify Search for Remaining Suspects

The detectives said that the attack disrupted normal operations at the school and prompted an immediate security response.

Therefore, after investigations and pursuing intelligence, the three suspects were arrested at different locations within Chemelil and are in police custody while undergoing processing pending their arraignment in court.

DCI also noted that detectives have intensified efforts to track down the remaining suspects who escaped after the attack.

“These three are now in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment. Meanwhile, officers are tirelessly pursuing additional leads to trail and apprehend the other suspects still on the run,” read part of the statement.
