Govt Launches Strategy to Boost Local Manufacturing of Health Products

The government has launched the Kenya Health Products and Technologies (HPTs) Local Manufacturing Strategy 2026-2030 to strengthen local production of health products and technologies.

The launch brought together health sector leaders, industry stakeholders, and development partners committed to improving Kenya’s healthcare system.

Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ahmed I. Mohamed attended the event alongside other key players in the health sector.

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga presided over the launch on behalf of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.

During the event, officials highlighted the importance of increasing local manufacturing capacity to ensure Kenyans have reliable access to essential health products.

“The Strategy provides a roadmap for strengthening local production of health products and technologies, reducing reliance on imports, enhancing health security, promoting innovation, and supporting sustainable access to quality, affordable health commodities,” the stakeholders noted during the launch.

Health Products Strategy Aims to Reduce Dependence on Imports

The Kenya Health Products and Technologies Local Manufacturing Strategy outlines plans to reduce the country’s dependence on imported health products.

Officials said increased local production will help Kenya respond better to health emergencies while ensuring a steady supply of medicines, medical devices, and other health commodities.

The strategy also seeks to encourage innovation within the healthcare sector and create opportunities for local manufacturers.

Supporting Universal Health Coverage

The government expects the initiative to support the country’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda by making quality health products more accessible and affordable.

The strategy is also expected to position Kenya as a regional hub for the manufacturing of health products and technologies.

Officials believe the plan will accelerate the growth of the local health products industry, create jobs, attract investment, and enhance the country’s health security in the coming years.
