Share
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released the schedule and guidelines for the 2026 Grade 10 and Vocational Level School-Based Assessments (SBA), outlining how schools will conduct projects, practicals and written assessments under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
According to the circular, projects and practical assessments will be conducted during the second term, while written tests will take place in the third term.
KNEC said assessment tools for Grade 10 and vocational level learners will be uploaded to the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal on July 2, 2026.
School principals will use their official school usernames and passwords to log in to the CBA portal.
A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to the registered phone number to complete the login process.
Schools experiencing login challenges have been advised to use the “Forgot Password” option to reset their credentials.
KNEC Tasks Principals With Downloading and Uploading Assessment Scores
The council said principals will be responsible for downloading the assessment tools, ensuring the projects and practicals are administered, and uploading learners’ scores within the set timelines.
Subject teachers will assess learners as they complete the assigned projects and performance tasks using the official scoring guides and rubrics provided by KNEC.
Teachers have also been directed to retain all records and evidence generated during the assessments, including videos, photographs and audio recordings where applicable.

KNEC encouraged schools to obtain assessment materials from their immediate environment or improvise where necessary to minimise costs.
The council further clarified that ICT and Physical Education (PE) will only be assessed at the school level, with sample assessment tools provided to guide teachers.

Strict Adherence to Scoring Guidelines
KNEC warned teachers against inflating marks or uploading scores that are not supported by learners’ actual work.
“Teachers are required to strictly adhere to the scoring guides and rubrics that are provided for each assessment when scoring the learners’ work.”
The council added,”Deviation in scoring, leading to over-awarding or uploading of fictitious scores not based on the learner’s work, shall be considered as malpractice and attract administrative action in line with the provisions of the KNEC Act.”
Scores to Be Uploaded by October 31
According to the schedule, schools offering STEM, Social Sciences, Arts and Sports, and Vocational Level pathways will access the assessment tools from July 2, 2026.
All learner scores must be uploaded to the CBA portal by October 31, 2026.
KNEC also noted that Grade 10 School-Based Assessment scores will contribute 15% of a learner’s final score at the end of Grade 12.
