A CR12 certificate is an important document issued by the Registrar of Companies through the Business Registration Service (BRS), which can be obtained online via the eCitizen platform.
According to BRS, CR12 is used for tender applications, regulatory approvals, and other business processes that require proof of a company’s ownership and management.
To obtain a CR12, applicants are required to have an official company name and registration number, a completed CR12 search request through BRS, Proof of payment for the processing fee, and a Valid identification document, either a National Identification Card or a passport.
How to Get a CR12 Certificate Online in Kenya via eCitizen
According to BRS, the following are the steps to follow in order to obtain a CR12 certificate online.
Step 1: Log in to eCitizen
An applicant is required to access the eCitizen website to start the process of application. However, in cases where one does not have an account, one can create one to continue with the process.

BRS further noted that after accessing the eCitizen portal, one will be required to log in to the BRS services and click on “Make Application” and choose the Official Search option, which generates a CR12 certificate.
Step 3: Search for the Company
At the search option, one will enter the company name or registration number and proceed to select the correct company from the search results. Here, they will also provide their details, including their postal address, email address, and phone number.
Step 4: Payment
In addition, BRS highlighted that at this stage, one will make payment for the Application Fee.
After payment, processing will take place for a period of between three and five working days, and the CR12 will appear in their eCitizen account, where they will be required to download it directly from the portal.
However, companies with older records or incomplete information may experience delays because some files may require manual retrieval.

- After incorporating a company
- After filing annual returns
- Following changes in shareholders
- Following the appointment or resignation of directors
- After increasing or reducing share capital
- During major business transactions, including bank applications, tender submissions, or regulatory approvals
