Outrage as Boda Boda Rider Secretly Films Women While ‘Hunting’ for Phone Numbers in Nairobi

A boda boda rider from Nairobi’s Pipeline estate has gone viral after sharing a video of himself approaching women on the street while secretly recording their interactions.
In the clip, the rider is heard talking behind the camera, “Wacha tutafute mwingine atupe number, inaitwa hunting in Pipeline,” suggesting he had been carrying out similar encounters.
The rider approaches a woman and starts a conversation.
He greets her, saying, “Mambo, excuse me, songa hapa kando kidogo.”
The woman agrees to step aside, and the two exchange greetings before the rider compliments her appearance.
He then asks, “Uneweza kubali tujuwane walahi?” before requesting her phone number.

The woman appears hesitant and asks where he is from. The rider replies that he is just passing by and tells her she looks good.
She smiles before saying, “Nimeolewa.”
The rider, however, continues insisting and says, “Si tuweza fanya chini ya maji?” before repeatedly asking for her phone number. The video ends shortly afterward.
Pipeline BodaBoda Video Sparks Mixed Reactions Online
The viral video has reignited discussions online about recording strangers without their knowledge, with many Kenyans debating issues of consent, privacy and whether creating such content for social media crosses the line.
Others viewed the clip as entertainment, while many called for greater respect for people’s privacy in public spaces.

@Handrian commented,”Unfortunately, our ladies love attention from people with anything that’s moving and has wheels ata kama inaendeshwa na shetani mwenyewe.”
@George strongly criticized the rider, writing,”Uyu anafaa apigwe na afungwe jela anafanya nini sasa.”
@Hails raised concerns about privacy, saying,”I hate people who record people without their consent, especially if they’re doing it for content.”
@Msumeno argued that the issue should be viewed from both sides, commenting,”So today it’s a man recording women without their knowledge. What about ladies doing the same? What should we say.”
@Franklin questioned whether privacy laws could apply, asking,”Hapa data protection inaapply?”
Meanwhile, @Langat reacted humorously by quoting the rider’s repeated request,”Nipee tu namba😂”
