How 'Broke' Slay Queens Allegedly Slept on the Beach After Mombasa Summertides

The Summertides event left dozens of slay queens stranded on Kenyan beaches after the three-day Summer Tides Festival ended at Lost Beach Club, Malindi, on July 4, 2026.

A video circulating online shows several women sleeping on the sand near the venue, with luggage beside them and no clear transport out of town.

The shot captures the girls sleeping on the sand near the beach, with some using each other to cover themselves.

Comments under the clip accuse some attendees of “hopping on transport for free” without planning accommodation, behavior locals now call the “summer tides culture.”

Summer Tides is Kenya’s premier annual beach music festival and is one of the biggest cross-coastal entertainment events across Africa.

It attracts thousands of partygoers to a weekend of DJs, Afrobeats, Amapiano, live entertainment, and beach life.

Malindi Hosts Summertides Festival, Attracting Thousands and Requiring Extensive Security Measures

The festival ran from Thursday, July 2 to Saturday, July 4 at the Lost Beach Club in Malindi and drew an estimated 20,000+ travelers to the coast, according to event organizers.

Malindi Sub-County Police Commander Moses Kosgei (SCPC) confirmed the General Service Unit and other units were deployed to provide security and maintain order through Saturday.

Kosgei said authorities expected at least 15,000 travelers and closed several roads in and out of town to manage traffic.

“Security measures were put in place as we expected high numbers of travelers. GSU, among other units, were commanded to provide security to travelers and maintain order until Saturday,” Kosgei stated.
