South African football is in mourning after Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25.
News of his death emerged on Saturday, just weeks after he represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Sports journalist Kevin Teya was among the first to break the devastating news.
“Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25. The midfielder recently represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup,” Teya wrote.
The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) also paid tribute to the midfielder, describing his passing as a major loss to South African football.
The union said Adams had represented the country with pride, courage, and distinction during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and extended condolences to his family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, teammates, and supporters.
From Stellenbosch Academy to National Stardom
Adams was born on May 5, 2001, in Cape Town, South Africa, and rose to be one of South Africa’s most promising midfielders coming out of the Stellenbosch FC Youth Academy.
In 2020, Adams signed a professional deal with the senior side becoming the first ever Stellenbosch academy player to do so, thus marking the start of a brilliant professional career.
The all-round midfielder debuted for the senior Stellenbosch side in August 2020 before becoming a key player in their starting line-up.

In his five-year tenure with the club, Adams made more than 100 appearances and contributed significantly to the victory of Stellenbosch in the 2023 Carling Knockout cup, becoming one of the best midfielders of the Premier Soccer League.
His outstanding game attracted the attention of big clubs, as in 2025 Adams transferred to the reigning South African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.
At Sundowns, Adams secured his place in the squad and earned another trophy by winning the 2025-26 CAF Champions League with the club.
Rise With Bafana Bafana
Besides his excellent club performances, the constant display by Adams meant he would also make the Bafana Bafana national team under Coach Hugo Broos.
The midfielder played for the national team that took the third position at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before featuring prominently in South Africa’s qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after scoring key goals in the qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.
Adams was chosen in the final South African 26-man squad to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and went ahead to start for Bafana Bafana at the World Cup.
The performance of Adams in the World Cup ensured South Africa went past the group stage at the most important football competition in the world.
