Infotrak Survey Reveals Why More Kenyans Are Rejecting the Broad-Based Govt

A new Infotrak Research and Consulting survey has revealed that more Kenyans oppose the broad-based government than support it, with concerns over poor government performance, self-interest among politicians, and corruption emerging as the leading reasons behind the opposition.

According to the survey, 37 % of Kenyans said they oppose the broad-based government, compared to 33 % who support it.

In addition, another 27% said they neither support nor oppose the arrangement, while 3% were undecided.

According to Infotrak, among those opposed to the broad-based government, 40% cited non-existent or limited development and poor government performance as their main concern.

Another 19% said they believe the arrangement primarily serves the personal interests of politicians, while 16% pointed to corruption as a key reason for their opposition.

Additionally, 11% argued that the broad-based government weakens the opposition and reduces accountability.

Other concerns raised included an unclear agenda for the political union with 7% of tribalism and 4%  favouritism, and the increased cost of government to taxpayers with 2%.

Despite the opposition, the survey also found that a third of Kenyans support the political arrangement. Among supporters, 35 % said the broad-based government promotes peace, political stability, and reduced tensions.

Additionally, Infotrak noted that 28%  believe it fosters national unity and cohesion, while 24 % cited improved development and service delivery.

Other reasons included greater inclusivity and equitable distribution of resources across regions and communities with 7%, better cooperation among political leaders with 5%, and improved government accountability with 1%.

Support and Opposition Vary Across Regions

Meanwhile, the survey also found notable regional differences in attitudes towards the broad-based government.

Support was highest in the Eastern region at 48 %, followed by Nyanza 45% and Rift Valley 44%. It was the lowest in the Western region at 19 %, as the Coast recorded 28% and Central 27%.

Opposition was strongest in Nairobi, where 50% of respondents said they opposed the arrangement, followed by Central with 46% and Western with 42%.

The findings also showed differences across age groups and gender. The Support for the broad-based government was highest among respondents aged 27 to 35 years, while those aged 18 to 26 years recorded the highest level of opposition.

By gender, 34 % of men said they support the broad-based government compared to 32 % of women.
