A major traffic disruption hit motorists along the busy Thika Superhighway on Tuesday July 14, after authorities temporarily closed a section of the road near Rurie, close to Ruiru, following the discovery of a body in a nearby river.
The closure was effected to allow emergency responders, police officers and other relevant agencies to safely retrieve the body from the river without exposing motorists and rescue personnel to additional risks.
The discovery immediately attracted crowds of onlookers, slowing traffic in both directions as security officers moved to secure the scene.
Police had not immediately disclosed the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding the death, with investigators expected to commence inquiries after the body is recovered and transferred to a mortuary for identification and a post-mortem examination.
Rescue Mission Commences
According to reports, the rescue team arrived at the spot immediately after the body of the deceased was sighted floating in the river near the highway bridge.

The officers blocked access to the area as crowds began forming on the road side to watch the operation.
The traffic police had re-routed all traffic from that area to other parts, leading to heavy traffic on Thika Road which is one of the most congested highways in Kenya connecting Nairobi to Kiambu, Murang’a and central Kenya.
Past roadblocks on the highway had led to massive traffic jam due to the large number of cars plying it daily.
Some drivers were stranded in the long traffic jams while some took alternative routes including Ruiru and neighboring roads.
Police Begin Their Investigations
At the time of writing, no statement had been released regarding whether any foul play was involved or whether it was a tragic accident.

Detectives are supposed to record the scene before removing the body for further investigation.
The investigators would have to determine the time of entry into the water and any possible reports of missing individuals to help identify the victim.
It is also common practice for post-mortem to be done to determine the cause of death, while the detectives collect witness statements and evidence around the scene.
