How to Check Container Status at Mombasa Port

All importers, exporters, clearers and cargo owners who use the Port of Mombasa can now track the progress of the cargo at the Port of Mombasa via the KPA’s eCitizen Portal online.

The Port of Mombasa is the biggest and most active seaport in the whole of East Africa; the port serves not only Kenya but also other landlocked nations like Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi and some parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Millions of tons of cargo are processed each year at the port.

To improve transparency, the Kenya Ports Authority incorporated most of its customer services onto the national eCitizen portal system.

It is also possible to track the progress of the cargo during various stages of clearance.

Steps on How to Check Container Status at Mombasa Port 

The official method of doing this starts with logging into the Kenya Ports Authority eCitizen Portal and then logging in using valid eCitizen credentials.

A first-time user must create an eCitizen account before being able to access the services of KPA.

From here, users are supposed to go to the Government Services page and then choose the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) or Cargo Handling Services module.

The dashboard will have many different online services which are meant for consignees, importers and licensed clearing agents.

From this, users should select the Consignment Tracking or View Cargo Movement option.

The feature allows a person to check how far the process of cargo handling is by giving him/her the last operational update made by KPA.

The user should enter either the exact Container Number or the Bill of Lading (BL) Number depending on the shipment.

They are the unique codes that allow tracking of any particular shipment.

When the form is submitted, the portal will show you the last status of your shipment, including cargo location and its movement at the port, documents processing status, and invoice status.

Information Available on the Portal

KPA online portal not only gives users information on the consignment but goes further to offer other important details on the status of the shipment, such as:

• Consignment current status.
• Consignment progress during the operational phase.
• Processing of document lodgements and pickups.
• Outstanding invoices and payments.
• Customs processing update when applicable.
• Agent details associated with a certain consignment.

To clearing and forwarding agents, the portal also gives information on how to lodge documents on various cargo types, which include normal cargo pick-ups, Container Freight Station (CFS) cargo pick-up, and cargo requests.

The unified portal has become increasingly significant due to the continuous growth in shipping volumes through the Port of Mombasa.

Previously, customers had to visit different offices and access multiple portals to track the status of their cargo.

KPA has now integrated these services into one unified portal, allowing customers to access all the necessary information in one place.

Through the portal, customers can also pay their invoices online without visiting KPA offices.

The portal also keeps users’ payment histories, allowing businesses to maintain digital records of their transactions.

The agents can also manage the customer’s account and view their transaction history.
