Leaders Mourn Death of Former IEBC Commissioner

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Mohamed Abdullahi Sharawe has died.

Leaders from across the country paid tribute to the veteran public servant on Monday, July 20, praising his long career in government and his contribution to Kenya’s electoral system.

The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed.

Former Mandera Senator Mohamed M. Mahamud was among the first leaders to announce the news and remember Sharawe’s life and service.

“I have received with profound sadness the news of the passing of my dear friend, classmate, and colleague, Eng. Abdullahi M. H. Sharawe, who passed away this morning,” Mahamud said.

He described Sharawe as a respected colleague and friend whose dedication to public service touched many lives.

Mohamed Wehliye described him as a dedicated public servant and accomplished professional.

“Innalilahi waina ilahi rajiuan. Eng Abdullahi Mohamed Sharawe passed on last night. May Almighty Allah grant him Jannatul Firdous and give his family sabr and iman. Engineer Sharawe was a great public servant for many years and a top professional.”

MP Adan Keynan Pays Tribute

Eldas MP Adan Keynan described Sharawe as a statesman whose life was marked by integrity, humility and commitment to serving the country.

According to the legislator, Sharawe’s contribution went beyond government ministries and electoral reforms.

He noted that the former commissioner also chaired the Special Presidential Committee on Muslim Concerns after his appointment by former President Mwai Kibaki in 2009, where he led efforts to address issues affecting the Muslim community.

Keynan also highlighted Sharawe’s service as Chairperson of the Public Service Commission, saying he championed professionalism, integrity and excellence in public service.

“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life of honour, patriotism and selfless service. His legacy reminds us that true leadership is measured not by the offices one occupies, but by the institutions strengthened, the values upheld and the lives touched,” Keynan said.

Key Role in IEBC and Electoral Reforms

Sharawe played a significant role in Kenya’s electoral reforms.

He served as a commissioner of the Interim Independent Boundaries Review Commission (IIBRC), which was tasked with reviewing constituency and electoral boundaries.

He later became a commissioner in the inaugural Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), helping lay the foundation for Kenya’s electoral and boundary management framework under the 2010 Constitution.

Long Career in Public Service

Sharawe served in several senior government positions during his decades-long career in public service.

He served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Roads and Public Works before later becoming Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Research, Technical Training and Applied Technology.

During his time in government, he earned a reputation as a dedicated public servant and an experienced engineer.

Beyond his roles in the Executive, Sharawe also contributed to strengthening Kenya’s public institutions through various leadership positions.
