5 Paths Gachagua Could Take to Defeat Ruto in 2027

A new survey by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) has shown that most voters opposed to President William Ruto’s re-election believe Rigathi Gachagua can help defeat him in 2027 by supporting another opposition candidate rather than leading the opposition ticket.

Released on July 24, 2026, the survey examined possible outcomes involving the former Deputy President and his role in the 2027 presidential contest.

TIFA based the findings on respondents who oppose Ruto’s re-election.

The survey found that 33% of respondents said Gachagua should be allowed by the court to contest but should support another opposition candidate.

Meanwhile, 29% said he should support another opposition candidate if he is not allowed to contest.

62% Favour Gachagua Backing Another Opposition Candidate

According to the findings, the two options where Gachagua supports another opposition candidate account for 62% of respondents who oppose Ruto’s re-election.

“Nearly two-thirds (62%) believe Gachagua should support the strongest opposition candidate, compared with just 14% who want him to lead the opposition ticket,” TIFA stated.

The research firm further noted that anti-Ruto voters are primarily focused on strengthening the opposition’s chances of winning than on who leads the coalition.

14% Want Gachagua to Lead Opposition Ticket

However, 14% of respondents said Gachagua should be allowed to contest and become the main opposition candidate.

This option attracted less support compared with the two outcomes where respondents preferred him to support another opposition candidate.

Additionally, 5% of respondents said no possible outcome would allow Ruto to be defeated, while 19% were unsure about the best option.

The findings show that voters opposed to Ruto’s re-election are placing more emphasis on opposition coordination and strategy as political groups prepare for the 2027 General Election.

Trends and Insights for Africa released the findings on July 24, 2026, as part of its research on Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
