KeNHA Announces One-Month Closure of Section of Waiyaki Way

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary partial closure of Waiyaki Way (A8 Road), affecting motorists using the Mombasa-bound lanes between GTC and Kempinski in Nairobi.

According to a public notice dated July 24, the closure will take effect from Friday, July 31, 2026, and will run until Monday, August 31, 2026, as the authority carries out scheduled highway maintenance works on the affected section.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Waiyaki Way (A8 Road) between GTC and Kempinski on the Mombasa bound lanes will be partially closed temporarily from Friday, July 31, 2026 to Monday, August 31, 2026,” KeNHA stated.

KeNHA said the temporary closure will allow engineers to carry out highway maintenance works on the affected section to improve the road’s condition and enhance safety for motorists.

Moreover, the affected stretch serves as a key transport corridor linking Nairobi’s central business district to Westlands and other western suburbs, which record heavy traffic during peak hours.

Waiyaki Way Motorists Advised to Use Alternative Routes

Meanwhile, KeNHA urged motorists intending to use Waiyaki Way during the period to adjust their travel plans and use alternative routes to avoid delays.

“All Motorists intending to use Waiyaki Way during this period will utilize the unclosed sections of this road as well as consider using alternative routes to ensure minimal traffic disruption,” the notice read.

As a result, drivers heading toward the city centre and those leaving Nairobi should expect slower movement, especially during morning and evening peak hours.

Traffic Management Measures in Place

Additionally, KeNHA directed road users to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with officers on site to ease movement along the corridor.

“Motorists are further advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site. Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works,” the Authority added.

At the same time, police officers and traffic marshals will guide motorists along the affected section to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion throughout the maintenance period.
