HELB Gives Directions to Students Who Haven’t Received HEF Portal Activation Links

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has issued a statement following complaints from applicants about delays and challenges in receiving activation links for the Higher Education Fund (HEF) Portal.

In its clarification, HELB urged applicants not to panic, noting that some activation emails may have been redirected to spam or junk folders.

“Still waiting on that HEF Portal activation email? Before you panic, check your Spam or Junk folder—it might already be there!” the board said.

Activation Link to Expire Shortly 

Meanwhile, HELB reminded users that the activation link has a limited validity period, which may also contribute to the reported challenges.

“Remember, your activation link is only valid for 3 hours. If it expires, simply register afresh on the HEF Portal,” the statement added.

Further, the board urged applicants to use correct email addresses during registration and activate their accounts promptly to avoid disruptions.

At the same time, HELB assured applicants that the HEF Portal remains accessible despite increased traffic as students continue submitting applications.

Postgraduate Scholarships Now Open For 2026/2027

Notably, this update comes shortly after HELB opened applications for partial postgraduate scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year on July 30.

In a notice, the board invited eligible students pursuing master’s and PhD programmes to apply, targeting those enrolled in accredited institutions across the country.

“The Higher Education Loans Board applications for the 2026–2027 Postgraduate partial scholarships are now open. Eligible applicants are Kenyan students enrolled for master’s and PhD programs in local Public or Private Universities recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE),” read the notice.

According to HELB, successful master’s applicants will receive funding for two years, while PhD students will receive support for three years.

To qualify, applicants must have attained at least a Second-Class Upper Division in their undergraduate studies and hold a valid admission letter for a STEM or agriculture-related course.

Additionally, HELB stated that previous beneficiaries must be actively repaying their loans or have fully cleared their balances before applying.
