Motorists Warned as Oversized Cargo Begins Three-Month Journey Across Kenya

Motorists have been warned to exercise caution as abnormal cargo convoys begin a three-month journey across major highways in Kenya.

In a notice dated August 6, TransEast Professional Hauliers announced that it will transport oversized cargo, including transformers, earth-moving machines, breakbulk cargo, crates and steel structures, between August 6 and November 6, 2026.

The company said the movement will take place daily between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with road users advised to remain vigilant whenever they encounter the convoys.

“Abnormal Load Transportation. This is to notify all Road users and the General Public of the Abnormal Load movement on the following routes. Please exercise caution when in the vicinity of this convoy,” read part of the notice.

Motorists Warned of Three-Month Oversized Cargo Movement to Affect Mombasa–Nairobi Highway 

According to  TransEast Professional Hauliers,  the cargo being transported measures approximately 40 metres in length, 6 metres in width and 6 metres in height, making it one of the largest loads to be moved on Kenyan roads.

The cargo includes transformers, earth-moving machinery, breakbulk items, crates and steel structures, all of which require careful handling during transit due to their size and weight. 

In addition, the company noted that the convoys will use several key transport corridors, including the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway, before branching out to different parts of the country.

The designated routes include:

• Mombasa–Nairobi–Nakuru–Kericho–Awasi–Ahero–Kisumu
• Mombasa–Nairobi–Nakuru–Eldoret–Malaba
• Mombasa–Nairobi–Nakuru–Kericho–Kisii–Migori–Isebania
• Mombasa–Nairobi–Thika–Kenol–Makutano–Embu–Moyale
• Mombasa–Kibwezi–Kitui–Kapat–Kalindini–Kanyonyo–Matuu–Thika–Nanyuki Road–Kiganjo–Subukia–Nakuru–Eldoret–Kitale–Malaba

Kenyans To Exercise Cautions While On The Road

TransEast further urged motorists and other road users to be cautious when driving near the abnormal load convoys, noting that the size of the cargo may affect traffic flow along the affected routes.

Furthermore, motorists travelling along the affected highways have been advised to remain alert, maintain safe distances and follow directions from traffic officers and convoy escorts whenever the abnormal loads are passing.

The movement is expected to continue until early November, affecting motorists using major roads linking the Coast, Nairobi, western Kenya, northern Kenya and border towns such as Malaba, Isebania and Moyale.
