Five Injured as Chaos Erupts at Mombasa County Assembly During Youth Event

Five people have been injured, including youths, activists, and journalists who were reportedly attacked outside the Mombasa County Assembly on August 12, 2026, as they gathered to present a memorandum on International Youth Day.

The group included representatives from VOCAL Africa together with other civil society organizations, and they had visited the county assembly to push for implementation of the Mombasa County Youth Policy.

According to the VOCAL Africa CEO Hussein Khalid, the delegation had planned to present the memorandum to the Speaker of the County Assembly as part of activities for International Youth Day 2026.

However, their plans were disrupted when individuals reportedly confronted them right outside the county assembly, and five people ended up being injured.

Videos from the scene show some human rights defenders and people being assaulted during the confrontation with individuals causing chaos at the Mombasa County Assembly.

This incident caused chaos and caused the crowd to disperse, with the people at the scene looking for safety.

The youth had sought to raise concerns that are affecting young people in Mombasa County, including employment opportunities, skills development, and participation in county governance.

The groups also raised concerns about insecurity and youth involvement in crime, drug abuse and gangs, particularly in parts of Old Town, Kisauni, and Likoni.

Their Grievances

They argued that unemployment and a lack of meaningful opportunities were worsening vulnerabilities among young people.

They called on the county assembly to fast-track the consideration of the Youth Policy Bill and allocate funds in the current financial year for training programmes.

The memorandum also calls for the creation of a permanent county youth employment and empowerment fund to support youth-owned businesses and internships, as well as improve young people’s access to county employment, tenders, and leadership opportunities.

VOCAL Africa has appealed to members of the public to help identify the individuals captured in the footage while condemning the incident and calling for those responsible to be held accountable
