Kenya KDF Boss Meets Ethiopian Military CDF: Key Details

His Excellency Ambassador General Bacha Debele Buta, the Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Kenya, met with the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.

In a statement. the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) said the longstanding defence partnership between Kenya and Ethiopia continues to play a significant role in safeguarding shared interests and promoting peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.

KDF said the enduring partnership featured prominently during the meeting as General Kahariri and Ambassador General Buta discussed a range of bilateral and regional security matters.

The two placed emphasis on strengthening cooperation between the KDF and the Ethiopian National Defence Force.

“The discussions highlighted the importance of sustained coordination in addressing security challenges that transcend national boundaries,” KDF said.

KDF-Ethiopia Meeting Key Points Discussed

Among the key areas explored were structured intelligence and information sharing, enhanced operational coordination and strengthened border security management.

The two leaders acknowledged that closer cooperation in these areas remains critical to anticipating emerging threats, improving collective preparedness and safeguarding communities along the shared border.

“Defence diplomacy remains a vital pillar of regional security, providing a platform for neighbouring states to strengthen military cooperation, enhance mutual trust and develop coordinated responses to increasingly complex security challenges,” KDF added.

Kenya–Ethiopia Defence Relations

Further, the meeting underscored the strategic importance of Kenya–Ethiopia defence relations within the wider regional security architecture.

As neighbouring countries with shared security interests, Kenya and Ethiopia continue to contribute to peacebuilding and stability initiatives across the Horn of Africa, where evolving security dynamics require greater collaboration, timely information exchange and coordinated action.

Strengthening Interoperability

Beyond immediate security priorities, the engagement emphasised the value of strengthening interoperability between the two defence forces through sustained professional interaction, joint initiatives and continued exchange of expertise.

Such cooperation enhances the capacity of both militaries to respond effectively to common security challenges while reinforcing mutual confidence and institutional ties.

Besides, General Kahariri and Ambassador General Buta reaffirmed the importance of maintaining regular high-level engagements and strengthening coordination between the two countries’ defence establishments.

Continued cooperation in border security, operational preparedness and defence diplomacy is expected to further consolidate the Kenya–Ethiopia partnership and contribute to a more secure, peaceful and stable Horn of Africa.
