Profile of José Alberto Suárez, Telemundo Executive Killed in Samburu Helicopter Crash

José Suárez, born in Florida, was a veteran television journalist and senior Telemundo executive whose career spanned more than 25 years.

He had extensive experience in journalism, television management, and executive leadership.

At the time of his death, Suárez was serving as president and general manager of Telemundo 31 in Orlando, Telemundo 49 in Tampa, and Telemundo Fort Myers–Naples.

José Alberto Suárez’s Rise Through Telemundo and NBC

He began his television career as a reporter and anchor, working for media outlets in Florida, Ohio, and Texas. These roles gave him first-hand experience in reporting, broadcasting and local news production.

After gaining experience in front of the camera, José Suárez moved into newsroom management and began taking on greater responsibilities at television stations.

His career took him through several US markets, including Sacramento and Fresno, as he developed experience managing news operations and leading television teams.

The senior executive had spent about 18 years working with Telemundo and NBC stations, rising through several leadership positions.

During his career, he held senior roles at Telemundo stations in Fresno, Las Vegas, Utah and San Antonio. José Suárez also previously held a leadership position at Telemundo 51 in Miami.

His Career Marked by Television Excellence; Awards

In April 2019, José Suárez became president and general manager of Telemundo 33, a position he held until February 2024.

After leaving Telemundo 33, he moved to the Orlando area, where he became president and general manager of Telemundo 31 in Orlando, Telemundo 49 in Tampa, and Telemundo Fort Myers–Naples.

This position placed him at the helm of three Telemundo operations and marked the highest-profile stage of his more than two-decade career in television, during which he led the expansion and growth of Telemundo’s markets.

Throughout his career, the Telemundo executive received several awards recognising his work in television.

His honours included a Lone Star Emmy Award, a Suncoast Emmy Award, and three Emmys for Best Daily News Program.

He also received several Associated Press awards.

Family Background

Beyond his professional positions,  José Suárez was married to Nicole Valls Duarte, and they reportedly had two sons.

However, details about his private life remained relatively limited.

He died on Wednesday August 19, 2026 in Kenya when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed in Samburu County on August 19, 2026. José Suárez was among the six people killed in the crash.
