Actress Hayden Panettiere, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Nashville’ Star, Dies at 36

Actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, has died at the age of 36.

Her representative confirmed her death to ABC News on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Further details about her death were not immediately available.

Law enforcement sources said police responded to an incident involving Panettiere on Sunday, and an investigation remains open.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement.

He added,“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

Her father asked for privacy as the family comes to terms with the loss.

Hayden Panettiere Acting Career

Panettiere began working in entertainment as a child and built a career that spanned more than three decades.

She gained international recognition when she played Claire Bennet, a cheerleader with supernatural abilities, in NBC’s hit series Heroes, which ran from 2006 to 2010.

She later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes in the musical drama Nashville, which ran from 2012 to 2018. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

Panettiere also appeared in films including Remember the Titans, Raising Helen, Ice Princess, Bring It On: All or Nothing and Scream 4.

She returned to the Scream franchise in 2023, reprising her role as Kirby Reed in Scream VI.

Early Start in Hollywood

Panettiere made her screen debut as a child and quickly established herself as a young Hollywood talent.

One of her early notable roles came in the 2000 sports drama Remember the Titans, where she played Sheryl Yoast alongside Denzel Washington.

She also lent her voice to the video game Until Dawn, adding to her work across film, television and gaming.

She Opened Up About Her Struggles

Panettiere became increasingly open about her personal struggles later in life.

In a 2022 interview with Good Morning America, she spoke about her experiences with alcoholism and postpartum depression.

She also released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in May 2026. The book explored her childhood fame, motherhood, mental health, and difficult experiences away from the spotlight.

Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28. Hayden later spoke about the devastating impact of his death and the guilt she experienced following his passing.

Panettiere was the mother of one daughter, Kaya Klitschko, whom she welcomed in 2014 with her former fiancé and former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Her death comes just months after the release of her memoir, which gave fans a deeper look into her life beyond her successful acting career.
