How Police Busted Suspected Fake Money Network and Arrested Four Suspects

Police in Makueni have seized counterfeit currency worth Ksh4.3 million and arrested four suspects in an operation targeting a suspected fake-money network in Mtito Andei.

Officers from Mtito Andei Police Station first moved into Kambu Township, where two suspects were found with KSh4 million in counterfeit Ksh1,000 notes.

The suspects were arrested during an intelligence-led operation targeting the suspected circulation of fake banknotes.

Police later extended the search to Mtito Andei Township, where they intercepted the truck which was transporting fertilizer from Mombasa to Naivasha.

Police seize KSh4.3 million in fake notes

A search of the truck uncovered another Ksh378,000 in counterfeit Ksh1,000 notes, which officers said had been concealed inside the vehicle.

The discovery brought the total value of counterfeit currency recovered during the operation to KSh4.378 million.

Two men travelling in the truck were arrested, bringing the total number of people arrested in the operation to four.

Police said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected syndicate involved in circulating counterfeit banknotes.

All four suspects remained in police custody as officers processed the case ahead of their appearance in court.

Recovered notes and other exhibits were secured at Mtito Andei Police Station as investigators worked to establish how the counterfeit currency was obtained and where it was intended to be taken.

The seizure represents one of the larger counterfeit-currency hauls reported in the area, with investigators now working to determine whether the suspects were acting alone or as part of a wider operation.

Detectives follow money trail

Investigators have since turned their attention to the wider network believed to be behind the counterfeit currency operation.

Detectives are tracing the source of the fake notes and seeking to establish their intended destination, as well as identify other people who may be linked to the suspected syndicate.

The investigation comes after officers made separate discoveries in Kambu and Mtito Andei, with the two operations ultimately leading to the recovery of more than KSh4 million in fake currency.

Police are also expected to examine the movement of the intercepted truck and the circumstances under which the additional counterfeit notes were concealed inside it.

Investigators will seek to establish whether the money was being transported to another location for circulation or whether it formed part of a broader counterfeit currency network operating across different areas.

The four suspects are set to face court proceedings after completion of police processing and investigations.

Meanwhile, the recovered counterfeit notes remain in police custody as detectives piece together the suspected money trail and determine whether the arrests will lead to further suspects or additional seizures.
