Motorists Warned of Possible Night Attacks Along Kisumu-Busia Road

Drivers using the Kisumu-Busia Road have been urged to exercise caution at night following a warning over possible attacks around the Maseno area.

A motorist travelling along the busy route reported that his vehicle’s window had been smashed before a group of people allegedly pursued him while carrying machetes and stones.

The driver warned motorists travelling between Kisumu and Busia to remain alert when approaching the Maseno area, particularly after dark.

“For those travelling from Kisumu to Busia, and those travelling from Busia to Kisumu, once you reach Maseno, it is bad,” he said.

He claimed the group smashed his window before chasing his vehicle.

“They have smashed my window, and I am being chased; they have machetes and stones,” he said.

Security concerns along the route

The warning comes amid previous security concerns along the Kisumu-Busia highway.

On June 25, police officers on a night patrol in Ugunja Sub-County disrupted an alleged attempt to ambush motorists along the highway.

Officers spotted a group blocking the road at Simero, and the individuals fled after noticing the patrol team.

Two motorcycles were recovered, and police said they believed the group intended to use them during the suspected robbery.

The highway has also experienced other disruptions this year. In May, protests by boda boda operators along the Busia-Kisumu road turned chaotic, with sections of the highway blocked, fires lit, and motorists reportedly stoned during running battles with police.

The incidents have added to concerns among motorists and other road users who depend on the route, particularly those travelling after dark.

Insecurity concerns raised across Kenya

The latest warning comes as security concerns continue to attract attention in different parts of the country.

In Nairobi, police commanders have stepped up efforts to tackle insecurity, with a particular focus on criminal gangs and goonism.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat said security agencies were reviewing their approach and strengthening interventions targeting criminal groups operating in communities and public spaces.

Assuring Kenyans that authorities are committed to ending criminal gang activities, saying police would continue working with other security agencies to strengthen the response.

Members of the public have also been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the police rather than confronting suspected criminals themselves.

The wider security concerns provide context to the latest warning along the Kisumu-Busia route, where motorists are now calling for increased patrols, particularly around sections considered vulnerable at night.
