Sifuna, Orengo Meet Amid Growing Battle for Linda Mwananchi Ticket

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has held a meeting with Siaya Governor James Orengo amid growing debate over who should fly the Linda Mwananchi Movement’s presidential ticket in the 2027 General Election.

Sifuna confirmed the meeting in a social media post, sharing a light-hearted account of their encounter ahead of the movement’s planned rally in Nairobi this weekend.

“SC James Orengo amenunua lunch,” Sifuna said after meeting the Siaya governor.

Sifuna, Orengo Meet as Rival Presidential Contenders

The meeting comes at a time when both politicians have emerged as key figures in discussions surrounding the opposition movement’s presidential ambitions.

Sifuna has positioned himself as a potential presidential contender under Linda Mwananchi, with his bid gaining attention as opposition leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Orengo, however, has also declared his intention to contest for the presidency, setting the stage for a potential contest within the movement.

The Siaya governor recently made his position clear during a burial ceremony in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, where he declared himself a serious presidential candidate.

“From today, know that I’m the presidential candidate, a serious presidential candidate,” Orengo said.

However, his declaration sparked debate within the opposition,with some leaders calling for the movement to rally behind a single candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

Orengo Defends His Presidential Ambitions

Meanwhile , Orengo has defended his decision to seek the presidency, arguing that competition for a party or coalition ticket is part of democratic politics.

The governor dismissed suggestions that his bid was intended to undermine Sifuna’s ambitions, maintaining that he remains committed to having one presidential candidate eventually represent the movement.

“I am going to run for president, which is not a crime,” Orengo said.

He also rejected claims that his decision was designed to derail Sifuna.

“I am not spoiling it, because I am committed to having one presidential candidate. Those who are raising these fears are not democrats,” he added.

Orengo further disclosed that the question of the presidential candidate had caused disagreement during a coalition retreat in Limuru, Kiambu County.

According to the governor, he opposed attempts to settle the question prematurely, arguing that more consultations were necessary.
