Uhuru Responds to Claims He Is Funding Sifuna and the Opposition

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has broken his silence on allegations that he is financing opposition activities and the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
Speaking during the Kijana Wamalwa memorial on Sunday, August 23, Uhuru appeared to distance himself from the claims, saying he did not want to be labelled as the sponsor of the ongoing political activities.
“Chungeni, mimi sitaki kuitwa sponsor,” Uhuru said.
The former president urged political leaders to campaign peacefully, saying Kenyans have the power to choose their preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election, adding that the decision on who will lead the country ultimately rests with the voters.
Uhuru Says He Has No Plans to Return to Politics
Uhuru also denied claims that he is still interested in returning to politics, noting that he was content with the time he has served Kenyans.
In addition, the former president urged Kenyans not to allow themselves to be divided by politics, saying it was time for other leaders to take the stage.
“It is time for other people, and Kenyans will decide. Do not agree to be divided,” Uhuru said.
His comments came hours after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna responded to President William Ruto’s claims that the former president is funding opposition activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sifuna dismissed the allegations and questioned the evidence Ruto had provided to support his claim that Uhuru is sponsoring the opposition.
He also criticised Ruto for relying on a newspaper headline as evidence, despite the President’s frequent criticism of newspaper reports as “fake news.”
The Nairobi Senator argued that a newspaper report does not prove that Uhuru is financially supporting the opposition or the Linda Mwananchi Movement.

Ruto’s claims followed an interview with the Daily Nation in which he was asked what evidence he had to support his assertion that Uhuru was funding the opposition.
The President referred to a Sunday Nation headline published on August 2, which reported on an alleged coalition involving Uhuru and opposition leaders.

Meanwhile, the debate over Uhuru’s alleged role has also extended to the financing of the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which has held rallies in different parts of the country.
Although Sifuna has repeatedly said the movement receives financial contributions from ordinary Kenyans and other supporters during its activities, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has alleged that Uhuru is funding the movement.
Kaluma claimed that Uhuru gave Siaya Governor James Orengo KSh100 million to finance Linda Mwananchi activities.
