Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has responded to claims by President William Ruto that his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, is funding the Linda Mwananchi Movement and the United Opposition.
In a statement on Sunday. August 23, Sifuna said President Ruto usually calls newspaper headlines “fake” but uses them as evidence that Uhuru is sponsoring the opposition.
“The “smartest” person in the country, when asked for evidence that Uhuru is sponsoring the opposition, points to a newspaper headline. Never mind that he repeatedly dismisses newspaper headlines as “fake news”,” said Sifuna.
“You work for the Nation, right? Can you check the Sunday Nation headline of August 2. What was the headline? It says ‘Uhuru super coalition against Ruto’. You answered yourselves. Despite everything he did, I won the elections,” President Ruto said.
This matter has added to the growing political debate over claims that the former head of state is funding efforts to unite opposition leaders against Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ruto has on several occasions accused Uhuru of working behind the scenes to frustrate his administration; however, the latest remarks have drawn criticism from Sifuna.

He claimed that the money was later used to fund violence in Homa Bay during the Linda Mwananchi rally led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
However, Kaluma did not provide any evidence to support his allegation that Uhuru is funding the opposition.
Meanwhile, former President Uhuru Kenyatta has not responded to the allegations that several politicians have made against him on different occasions.
The allegations come as political parties and leaders continue to form alliances and position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
