Kabarak’s Strict Dress Rules Spark Debate Over Crocs, Ripped Jeans and Crop Tops

Kabarak University’s strict dress code has triggered an online uproar after rules banning crop tops, ripped jeans, casual Crocs, and certain hairstyles and accessories resurfaced on social media.

The private Christian university’s code of conduct requires students to maintain what it describes as smart and professional dressing, with formal attire required during Chapel services, interviews, graduations, and other university functions.

The guidelines state that “Dressing smartly gives God honor and enhances our personality and Professionalism.”

Under the rules for female students, dresses and skirts must fall at least two inches below the knees in any position, while slits should not rise above the knee.

The university also prohibits clothing that exposes the midriff, back, or stomach, as well as see-through outfits, low necklines, spaghetti tops, and other revealing attire.

Female students are also banned from wearing trousers during Chapel services.

T-shirts and loose-fitting jeans are restricted to after 5 pm and weekends, provided they do not have inappropriate words, logos, holes, or patches.

The rules further restrict excessive makeup and certain types of earrings, while bathroom sandals are designated strictly for bathroom use.

Male students face separate requirements, including maintaining well-trimmed and combed hair, with plaiting and dyeing prohibited.

The code also prohibits necklaces, earrings, bracelets, tattoos and body piercings for male students.

Dress Code Restrictions

Baggy, sagging, worn-out or torn trousers are also prohibited, while caps and other headgear are restricted in areas including lecture halls, the library, dining hall, offices, Chapel and during university functions.

The university states that students can be “denied entry to the University and various University functions or places” if their dressing is deemed inappropriate.

Policy Controversy

The rules have sparked divided reactions online, with some social media users defending the guidelines as consistent with the institution’s Christian identity and emphasis on professionalism.

Others have questioned the strict restrictions, particularly those governing clothing, hairstyles, and accessories.
