Two Trailers Collide Head-On Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, Causing Traffic Disruption

A road accident involving multiple vehicles has been reported along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway between Sultan Hamud and Salama in Makueni County.

The crash occurred at Kwa DC on Saturday, September 12, involving a long-distance truck and two passenger vehicles.

According to initial reports, the truck lost control before ramming into the rear of one of the buses. The bus then crashed into another passenger vehicle, believed to be a matatu.

Crash Causes Traffic Build-Up on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway 

Following the collision, traffic built up along the busy highway as motorists slowed down while approaching the scene.

As emergency teams responded to the incident, the vehicles remained at the scene and affected the normal flow of traffic.

Reports indicate that an unknown number of people were feared dead while others sustained injuries, although authorities had not confirmed the exact casualty figures at the time of reporting.

Motorists using the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway were subsequently urged to exercise caution when approaching the affected section.

Salama-Sultan Hamud Stretch Records Fatal Crashes

The latest accident comes against the backdrop of several serious crashes reported along the Salama-Sultan Hamud stretch in recent months.

On June 8, 2026, a separate multi-vehicle crash near the ACK area in Salama killed seven people and left 27 others critically injured. The victims were reportedly taken to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital after the crash.

Earlier, on May 20, 2026, another collision occurred involving two trailers between Sultan Hamud and Salama. The crash caused disruption along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Further details on the circumstances that led to the latest collision are expected as authorities continue their assessment.

Against this backdrop, the Kenya Red Cross has highlighted the growing number of crashes and fatalities recorded across the country.

“Kenya Red Cross has recorded 33 road crashes, 180 casualties, and 40 deaths this August alone (as of the 20th). NTSA data shows 2,150 lives lost between January and June this year,” they reported.
