First Amsons-Funded Mother and Child Hospitals Break Ground in Bomet County

Kenya’s maternal health efforts have received a major boost after construction began on the first of 10 Mother and Child Level 4 hospitals to be built across the country.

The Chebunyo Mother and Child Hospital in Bomet County broke ground last weekend September 12 during a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto.

The hospital is part of the Amsons Mama na Mtoto Kwanza initiative, which Amsons Group is funding through a Ksh4.5 billion grant.

The US$35 million project is being implemented through the Amsons Group Foundation and aims to establish 10 modern mother-and-child hospitals across Kenya within two years.

Amsons Pledges Quick Completion

Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said the company would move quickly to complete all 10 facilities as part of its commitment to shared prosperity in Kenya.

“This ceremony marks the beginning of a major commitment by Amsons Group to support the Government of Kenya in improving access to quality maternal, newborn and child healthcare,” Nahdi said.
He added: “Through Amsons Group Foundation, we are investing US$35 million to establish ten mother-and-child hospitals across Kenya within two years. This Level 4 facility in Chebunyo is the first of those ten hospitals and will set the standard for the facilities that will follow.”

The 10 hospitals will be constructed under a Build, Equip, and Transfer (BoT) model with the Ministry of Health as part of the company’s corporate social investment initiative.

Hospitals to Serve More than 1 Million Women

The project targets more than 1 million underserved women in Nairobi, Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot.

Two of the hospitals will be located in Nairobi, while the remaining facilities will be spread across the other counties.

Each of the 10 hospitals will have a capacity of 250 beds. The facilities are expected to improve access to pre- and postnatal care, particularly for women living in remote and rural areas.

Available statistics indicate that about 5,000 children and 3,600 mothers die during delivery in Kenya, while 26 counties have been identified as having a high burden of maternal deaths.

Ruto Backs Health Infrastructure Expansion

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale also attended the groundbreaking ceremony. President Ruto said Kenya had undertaken its most ambitious health system transformation since independence over the last four years.

He said Amsons Group’s support would help strengthen ongoing health infrastructure expansion under the national Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) project.

The HSS project seeks to increase the number of adequately equipped Level 4 and Level 5 health facilities.

According to the President, the facilities will serve as key points of access for inpatient care, critical referrals and specialised care. They will also support emergency and critical services while providing advanced diagnostics and treatment.

The government, through the Ministry of Health and the respective county governments, will provide support for the new hospitals, including staffing and medical supplies.

Amsons Group said the 10 hospitals are expected to be completed within the next two years.
