Uhuru Breaks Silence After Court Bars Him from Being Jubilee Party Leader

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has broken his silence after a High Court ruling upheld Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, saying he respects the court’s decision and is ready to hand over the Jubilee Party chairmanship.

In a statement issued on September 15, 2026, Uhuru said the ruling does not limit his political life but provides legal clarity on the transition of retired presidents from formal political party leadership.

“The Office of the former President has taken note of the High Court’s ruling upholding Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, which guides the transition of retired presidents from formal political party leadership,” said the statement.

The statement came after the High Court, in a ruling, upheld the constitutionality of Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, which bars retired presidents from holding political party positions beyond six months after leaving office while enjoying retirement benefits under the law.

Court Ruling

According to the court, the provision does not violate a retired president’s constitutional rights but instead serves the public interest by preserving the non-partisan status envisioned for former holders of the country’s highest office.

Further, the statement clarified that the prolonged delay in handing over the Jubilee Party chairmanship stemmed from a contested internal party dispute that required legal clarity, saying the court’s guidance had now paved the way for a lawful transition.

“In regard to the long-delayed handover of the Party chairmanship, the Office clarifies that this process was not stalled by reluctance, but by a contested internal dispute that required legal clarity. With the court’s guidance, that path is now clear,” said the statement.

Former president said he was committed to ensuring the handover is completed in strict accordance with the Jubilee Party constitution and expressed confidence that the party’s internal processes would now proceed without hindrance.

New Chapter For Jubilee

“The former President affirms his absolute willingness to see the handover completed openly, lawfully, and in strict accordance with the Party’s constitution. He looks forward to the Party’s processes moving forward without hindrance,” read the statement.

Uhuru also welcomed what he described as a new chapter for Jubilee, saying the party should move forward under the rule of law, guided by its constitution and carried forward by the next generation of leadership.

“H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta welcomes this new chapter for Jubilee, built on the rule of law, guided by the Party’s constitution, and carried forward by the next generation of leadership,” the statement said.
