Otile Brown: “Hata Nikifa Leo, Jovial Asije Kwa Mazishi Yangu”

Kenyan musician Otile Brown has opened up about his strained relationship with fellow singer Jovial, revealing the extent to which their fallout affected him.

Speaking during an interview with Tony Mwirigi on September 22,  Otile said the disagreement had hurt him so deeply that he would not want Jovial to attend his funeral.

“Jovial ni mtu nasema leo hii hata nikikufa, ni mtu hafai kuachiliwa kwa mazishi yangu. Hata nikikufa leo, asikuje kwa mazishi yangu. That’s how deep it is,” Otile said.

When asked whether he would maintain that position even if he died that day, Otile responded in the affirmative, saying the singer should not be allowed to attend his funeral.

“Ata nikafa leo, asiruhusiwe kuja kwenye matanga yangu. That’s how deep she hurt me,” he said.

Musician Says Fallout Hurt Him Deeply

Otile acknowledged that some people have told him that he takes things too seriously, but said the experience with Jovial had affected him significantly.

“Watu huniambia nachukulia vitu serious sana,” he said.

However, the musician went on to draw a broader connection between taking issues seriously and the way people approach problems in society.

He argued that people can create better conditions for themselves but suggested that a failure to take important matters seriously can prevent progress.

Otile’s remarks come after a public disagreement between the two singers that played out on social media two months ago.

The dispute centred on their music collaborations and allegations concerning the sharing of revenue from their joint projects.

Jovial had previously claimed that she received only one payment of Ksh150,000 in March 2023 after raising concerns about payments from their collaborations.

She also accused Otile of being selfish and made claims about how he conducted their professional relationship.

The disagreement later became personal, with the two musicians publicly addressing each other’s grievances.

Otile Brown Defended Himself Against the Claims

In his defense , Otile responded to Jovial’s allegations by highlighting the support he claimed to have offered her.

He said he had paid her hospital bills following childbirth and had arranged VIP transportation when she was discharged.

On their music business, Otile also discussed challenges surrounding revenue collection in the African music industry.

He said he had not always collected his own publishing revenue because he lacked sufficient knowledge about the system when he began his career.

Otile also raised concerns about their song Ulinihukumu, claiming that he wrote the song and that Jovial released it without his approval.

However, Jovial later apologised to Otile, saying she wanted to bring the dispute to an end.

In her apology, she expressed concern that her child had become part of the public disagreement and said her son did not deserve to be involved.

She said she was apologising for the sake of her peace and her child, while indicating that she would approach similar situations differently in the future.
