“Stop Recruiting Me to Be a Role Model to Your Children,” Akothee Hits Back After Viral Video

Influential musician Akothee has hit back at Kenyans after a video of her performing while whining on a man sparked a fresh debate over her dressing, behaviour and public image, telling critics to stop recruiting her as a role model for children she did not give birth to.

The video, shared by BNN, showed Akothee in a revealing stage outfit during a performance, with the singer’s movements quickly becoming a talking point among social media users.

Some critics questioned her choice of dressing and conduct, while others defended her and praised her confidence, including her appearance.

The singer rejected the idea that she should change how she lives simply because critics have decided to hold her up as an example for their children.

“To my fellow Kenyans, listen and listen clearly, I have enough for you people recruiting me to be a role model I was never meant to be. I have already lived the life people told me to live, I have paid school fee for lessons never registered for and I have graduated from pleasing people with PhD in minding my own business,” Akothee said.

She made it clear that she was not interested in fitting into the image of a woman that society considers perfect, saying she had no intention of applying for such a position.

“I am not applying for the positions of a perfect woman of the year. You manage your morals, I manage my life,” she said.

Akothee Asks Kenyans to Stop Judging Her Life

Akothee’s response went beyond the viral performance, turning into a broader defence of how she chooses to live her life and the standards people repeatedly impose on her.

With her trademark sarcasm, she imagined the kinds of awards critics could give her because of her personal experiences.

“There are awards that are supposed to be given me. Awards of present single mother or chief executive officer of failed marriages, or the lady who has failed terribly in marriages,” she said.

She then took aim at what she described as attempts to make her responsible for setting an example for children who are not hers.

“You won’t give them to me. You’ll choose your own person and give that award. So, from today, stop recruiting me to be a role model to your children whom I did not give birth to,” Akothee said.

She also questioned why being a woman should automatically mean she has to conduct herself according to a particular set of expectations.

“Stop reminding me of things I am not supposed to do, because you are a woman so I should not,” she said.

For Akothee, the criticism is not simply about one performance. She suggested that some people have continued to judge her using incidents from her past, even when they encounter her away from the entertainment scene.

The singer specifically addressed politicians and other prominent people she says she meets at places such as airports, claiming that some still bring up events that happened years ago.

“And to all these prominent people I keep on meeting somewhere at the airport or wherever, then they start asking me things that happened years back,” she said.

‘The person you meet at the airport is not Akothee’

Akothee appeared particularly irritated by people who continue to bring up her past, recalling how someone had recently questioned her about Homa Bay.

“Today I met someone who was reminding me about Homa Bay. How long ago was that? What kind of embarrassment is that? I should now start explaining what happened in Homa Bay like, are you okay? Are we serious? You are still holding on to those things that happened,” she said.

The singer said she does not want every encounter with the public to turn into an interrogation over something she previously posted online or experienced publicly.

“Let’s respect each other. Either you enjoy the entertainment or shut up,” Akothee said.

She also drew a line between Akothee the entertainer and Esther Akoth, the woman people may encounter when she is simply going about her business.

“When I meet you anywhere, stop asking me things that I post on social media. I don’t want. I am not performing each and every time. The person you meet at the airport is not Akothee, that’s Esther. Ambassador Esther Akoth for that matter,” she said.

Akothee reminded her critics that entertainers are not constantly performing for the public, even when they are recognised in ordinary places.

“We are performing artists. We are not in the mood of explaining ourselves and being comedians everything,” she said.

She then offered an example of why she believes people should be more careful about assuming they know what an entertainer is going through simply because of what they see online.

“I could be flying out of the country for my heartbreak. You are there, ‘Eeh, you know last time in Homa Bay I was disappointed.’ So, what if you were disappointed? Up until now, that’s the only one you have seen. You are yet to see more,” she said.
