‘Why Are You Crying?’ Daughter Calls Out Aunt, Mourners at Mother’s Funeral

A funeral video has sparked widespread debate online after a grieving daughter publicly confronted mourners, accusing some of them of failing to support her mother while she was alive and only showing up after her death.

The daughter of the late Martha Sayo Nunu, seen in the video circulating online, said she had been managing her mother’s phone while the deceased was admitted to hospital and too weak to even wake up.

“Mi ndio nilikua naoperate mostly simu yake. Na kuna dada alimtumia message, hatujalipa rent ya kanisa. Mind you, my mum is in the hospital; she can’t even wake up,” she said.

She recalled receiving a message from a woman asking for church rent, despite never having visited or checked on her mother’s condition during her illness.

The Funeral

According to the daughter, she consulted her mother about the request, and they still sent the money even as the family struggled with the medical situation.

“And the sister sent her a message; she has never visited my mother. I told my mother, ‘ Do you have any cash? ‘ She told me yes, and we sent the money to the sister,’ she said.

The daughter accused the mourners of being heartless, saying it was surprising that she had managed to find transport fare to attend the funeral but had never spent even Ksh 100 to visit her mother while she was alive.

“Surprisingly, ulipata fare ya kuja hapa, but you could not visit my mum’s place ya 100 bob. Unamuitisha rent, sai umepata fare ya kufika hapa. Are you even serious? You are heartless; shame on you,” the girl said.

Additionally, she said she is surprised to see her mother’s sister at her funeral crying, calling her tears fake and saying she is surprised she is crying.

“I’m shocked to see her here pretending to cry. Why are you crying? If someone is sick, kindly check on her or him,” she said.

Reactions Online

The emotional outburst has generated mixed reactions across social media platforms, with many Kenyans saying the remarks reflected frustrations families often experience when loved ones receive little support during illness but attract large crowds after death.

“Reality is, people will only help you and cry for you when you are dead. I attended a burial of a sosh who died of hunger while we ate a four-course meal at the burial ceremony. Shame on us,” Kamuchithi said.

Brian said, “If ha-utaambiana kwa burial utamwambilia wapi kwingine, ukweli wacha isemwe Buwana.”

“People have gotten away with evil because there are no consequences. People need to know things have changed. Evil has consequences,” said Mike.

The video has continued circulating on social media, with many people saying Gen Z has made it a habit of calling out people who failed to show up for them during funerals.
