Gachagua, Kalonzo & Sifuna Hire UDA MP to Draft Formula for Picking One Presidential Candidate

Gatanga Member of Parliament (MP) Edward Muriu has said he has been tasked with preparing a draft coalition working formula for the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement on Monday, September 28, Muriu said he received instructions from senior opposition leaders including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Muriu thanked the four leaders for reaching out to him and committing to pursue a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

“Thank you, Rigathi, Kalonzo, Sifuna and Fred Matiang’i for reaching out to me and committing to a single presidential candidate in 2027,” Muriu said.

Edward Muriu Reveals Instructions He Received

He said the leaders had instructed him, in his capacity as Senior Counsel in the proposed alternative government, to prepare a draft coalition working formula as a prerequisite agreement for the principals to sign.

“Thank you for your unequivocal instructions to me as a Senior Counsel in the Alternative Government to prepare a draft coalition working formula as a pre-requisite agreement ready for signing by the principals ASAP,” he said.

Muriu said he was ready to undertake the task and would involve other lawyers within what he referred to as the “Wantam Brigade” to develop the proposed framework.

“I am up to the task. I will incorporate all like-minded legal minds across the Wantam Brigade to come up with a blueprint in a few days,” he added.

Kalonzo Hints at Working With Ruto

United Opposition leaders have consistently insisted that they will field one candidate to face President William Ruto in next year’s presidential election.

However, reports of a working coalition agreement come after Kalonzo Musyoka hinted that the Opposition could consider working with President Ruto if they lose the election in a free and fair contest.

Speaking during a church service in Siaya County, Kalonzo said the 2027 election should be conducted democratically.

He said both the Opposition and the government should be prepared to accept the election outcome.

“If you beat us, we will have to consider if you have behaved yourself, and if we beat you, we have to look at all these things,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo added that the country comes first and that there is no shortcut to ensuring democracy prevails.

“We have a nation here. We have to make this country truly democratic. I do not think we have a shortcut,” he added.
