Blow to Gachagua as Former MP Ditches DCP for ODM

Blow to Gachagua as Former Embakasi West MP George Theuri has officially joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), leaving the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Theuri was received into ODM on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, by the party’s Secretary General Catherine Omanyo during an event in Nairobi.

In a statement shared by the party, Omanyo welcomed the former MP to ODM, describing his entry as joining the “Chungwa Movement.”

“KARIBU sana to the Chungwa Movement, Mhe. George Theuri… in ODM we make dreams come true. SG @HonOmanyo today officially received into the party the immediate former MP for Embakasi West, Hon. Theuri, who committed his support and allegiance to the Movement. Youth President John Ketora was also present,” ODM said.

ODM said Theuri pledged his support and allegiance to the party during the admission ceremony. ODM Youth President John Ketora was also present during the occasion alongside other party members.

Additionally, Theuri previously served as the Member of Parliament for Embakasi West between 2013 and 2022.

Parliament records indicate that he represented the constituency during the 11th and 12th Parliaments and served on several committees, including the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security.

He first entered Parliament in 2013 after winning the Embakasi West seat on a The National Alliance (TNA) ticket. He retained the seat in the 2017 General Election after switching to the Jubilee Party.

Theuri’s Career

In the 2022 General Election, Theuri sought to retain the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but was defeated by Mark Muriithi Mwenje of the Jubilee Party.

Before joining Parliament, Theuri served as a councillor representing Umoja I in Nairobi, having entered local politics in 2007.

His latest move marks another change in his political affiliation after previously being associated with UDA and, more recently, DCP.

Theuri’s entry into ODM comes at a time when political parties and leaders are repositioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several politicians changing party affiliations and aligning themselves with different political formations.

ODM said Theuri’s admission was part of its ongoing party activities and mobilisation as it continues to organise its structures ahead of the next General Election.
