Who Is Aliko Dangote? The Story Behind Africa’s Billionaire Industrialist

Aliko Dangote is a Nigerian businessman and industrialist who founded and leads the Dangote Group, one of West Africa’s largest business conglomerates.

His business interests span cement, sugar, salt, flour, fertiliser, oil and gas, and petroleum refining. Over several decades, Dangote transformed a trading business into a large industrial group with operations across Africa.

Forbes lists Dangote as Africa’s richest person and reports that he had an estimated real-time net worth of $31.4 billion as of September 13, 2026.

Forbes also lists him as divorced and a father of three children.

Aliko Dangote Early Life and Family Background

Dangote was born in 1957 in Kano, Nigeria, into a prominent business family. His maternal grandfather, Alhaji Sanusi Dantata, was a successful trader in Kano who dealt in commodities including rice and oats.

Dangote grew up around business and commerce, experiences that influenced his interest in entrepreneurship. According to Forbes, Dangote has recalled that he began displaying an interest in business while he was still young.

He would buy sweets, give them to other people to sell, and keep the profits. His family background later became part of a wider business legacy that included the Dangote and Dantata families.

Education at Al-Azhar University

Dangote pursued his higher education in Egypt. He graduated from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, where official Dangote records state that he studied Business Studies.

Forbes lists his education as a Bachelor of Arts/Science from Al-Azhar University. He later received honorary doctorate degrees from several universities.

Among them were Coventry University in the United Kingdom and the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, both in 2016, as well as Ahmadu Bello University in 2019.

Starting His Business Career

Dangote began his business career in 1978 by trading commodities. He initially focused on products such as rice, sugar, and cement before shifting from trading to manufacturing.

In 1981, the Dangote Group was established as a trading business. The company initially imported commodities including cement, rice, sugar, flour and salt into Nigeria.

The business gradually expanded its distribution network and began importing bulk cement, which was then bagged and distributed in Nigeria.

From Trading to Manufacturing

During the 1990s, Dangote shifted the group’s focus from importing goods to producing them locally. This change became particularly important in the cement business.

The group invested in cement production facilities and expanded its manufacturing capacity in Nigeria before moving into other African markets.

Dangote Cement later became the group’s flagship business.

The company has an annual production capacity of 48.6 million metric tonnes and operates in 10 African countries. Dangote owns about 85% of the publicly traded company through a holding company, according to Forbes.

The wider Dangote Group now has a presence in 17 African countries, according to the company. Dangote later expanded into the fertiliser industry as part of his broader move into large-scale industrial production.

The Dangote Fertiliser plant in Nigeria began operations in March 2022. The facility forms part of the group’s businesses in the agricultural and industrial sectors.

The expansion also reflected Dangote’s focus on increasing local production of industrial goods and reducing reliance on imports.

The Dangote Refinery

One of Dangote’s biggest projects is the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals complex in Lagos. Construction of the refinery began in 2016, and the facility began refining operations in early 2024.

The refinery is located in the Lekki Free Zone and has a current crude distillation capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, according to Dangote’s official refinery website. The company describes it as the world’s largest single-train refinery.

This facility produces petroleum products including petrol, diesel and aviation fuel, as well as petrochemical products.

The project marked another major step in Dangote’s transition from a businessman who started in commodity trading to an industrialist involved in some of Africa’s largest manufacturing projects.
