Apostle Dan Wema, whose real name is Daniel Wanyonyi, is a Kenyan preacher, philanthropist, and social media personality who rose to fame through his acts of kindness.

He was born and raised in Kakamega, where he describes his childhood as difficult, especially because his mother died while he was still young.

In an interview, he revealed that his mother died while giving birth to his younger sibling, and his father later developed mental health issues due to the death of his wife.

This therefore made them learn how to navigate challenges while still young, which largely affected his decision to start helping people and doing charity work.

His Background

He also comes from a religious family. According to Wema, his grandparents were preachers and ran a church, while he began ministering as early as primary school.

For his education, he celebrated completing a university degree in 2024, which he said was fully funded by himself, and he has continued to speak on the importance of education.

However, he has never disclosed details of his degree or the university that he got the degree from. These personal details have remained private and not in the public eye.

After graduating, he motivated Kenyan youths to pursue education despite the challenges that come with it, as he continued doing charity work to help the less fortunate.

His Rise To Fame

Wema rose to fame through videos that he posted on social media pretending to be in need of assistance, whether food or money.

After seeing how people treat him after asking for assistance, he then rewards them with money or other forms of assistance after revealing who he is.

In addition, his content has attracted a large following on platforms including TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, while also making him a prominent figure in Kenya’s growing digital philanthropy space.

Currently, Dan Wema has built a significant online presence, with about 2 million followers on Facebook, over 1.5 million followers on TikTok, and more than 90,000 subscribers on YouTube.

Online Presence

Furthermore, his approach has occasionally attracted criticism, with some social media users questioning whether his videos are genuine.

Wema has rejected claims that his philanthropic missions are scripted, saying he works with generous Kenyans and supporters living abroad who contribute towards helping people featured in his content.

Beyond his social media experiments, Wema has been involved in fundraising and direct assistance to the less fortunate people.

He is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Wema Charity Foundation, an organisation involved in initiatives targeting vulnerable communities through areas including education, healthcare and housing.

Earnings

In the past, Wema disclosed that money used in his philanthropic activities comes partly from his gospel ministry and donations from well-wishers. He also said he engages in farming.

At the same time, Wema disclosed that he earned at least Ksh 70,000 per month from YouTube, while also receiving income through TikTok gifts and other digital platforms.

More recently, in June 2026, Wema said his Facebook earnings had crossed US$1,200, equivalent to roughly Ksh 155,000 at the time, attributing the income to engagement and Facebook’s monetisation programmes.

There is, however, limited information about his current marital status, spouse or children because he has kept that entirely private.
