Parents of Ian Mutinda Mumo, a 19-year-old Kabarak University student, have raised concerns over an alleged romantic relationship between their son and Monicah M. Muthami, a 57-year-old Nairobi County Assembly deputy clerk.
In a demand letter dated October 2 through their lawyer, the parents accused Monicah of taking their son from university, where he was admitted to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree and hosting him at her residence in Donholm, Nairobi.
“Our Client further informs us that shortly after the admission of his son to the University, you took the son to your place of residence at Donholm Estate in Nairobi, where you have since been keeping and engaging him in inappropriate romantic relationship. As a result, our Client’s son,” read part of the demand letter.

The family claimed that it sold its only piece of land to raise approximately Ksh300,000 for the student’s university fees, which they say were paid in full.

However, the father alleged that shortly after Ian joined the university, Monicah took him to her residence in Donholm, where he has allegedly remained.
According to the demand letter, the family is concerned that the alleged relationship has contributed to Ian abandoning his university education despite the fees having already been paid.
The lawyer argued that the situation was “seriously jeopardizing” Ian’s education and future, and called for an end to any alleged interference with his studies.
Additionally, the lawyer asked Monicah to immediately cease from what it described as a romantic relationship with the student’s son. This also called for her to stop interfering with his education, encouraging or facilitating his continued absence from university, as well as stop hosting him at her residence.
“In view of the foregoing, our firm instructions are to DEMAND from you, which we HEREBY DO, that you immediately CEASE AND DESIST from having a romantic relationship with our Client’s son; interfering with his education and/or encouraging/facilitating his continued abandonment of his university studies; and hosting him at your place of residence,”
Family Threatens Further Legal Action
The lawyer further warned that unless Monicah provided a written undertaking to desist from the alleged conduct within seven days, the family had instructions to institute legal proceedings against her.

It also stated that the father reserved the right to bring the matter to the attention of the Nairobi City County Assembly, where she currently works.
“It is pertinent to point out that our Client reserves the right to formally bring the matter to the attention of your employer, the Nairobi City County Assembly, and in particular your immoral, unethical and unbecoming conduct, which falls short of the values, standards and principles governing-public service,”
The lawyer argued that the alleged conduct was inconsistent with the values and standards expected of public service.
Meanwhile, the matter has reportedly attracted the attention of community members, including village elders, pastors and the area chief, amid claims that the 57-year-old woman and the 19-year-old student come from the same village.
