The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has officially called off the lecturers’ strike, ending the disruption in universities.
UASU leaders also held a meeting with Education CS Julius Ogamba at Jogoo House in Nairobi in the morning of Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga said the Union and the government had reached an agreement on a two-phase payment of the Ksh7.9 billion.
“I want to apologise to the comrades for the 42 plus days they have lost. However, our members have committed that they are going to recover the lost time fully,” Wasonga stated.
“It is upon the government that you honour what we have signed here today. If you honour what we have signed here today, I want to commit that there shall be no strike called by UASU up to 2030,” he added.
It also comes after the UASU leadership held a meeting on the evening of Tuesday, November 4, to discuss the government’s proposed two-phased plan.
The lecturers’ strike, which began on September 17, 2025, paralyzed learning activities in public universities across the country.

On November 4, 2025, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi urged the striking lecturers to accept the bid of government.
Speaking before the National Assembly, he said the government should care for university staff, but with a formula citing that Kenya is still struggling with an economic crisis.
Lecturers were demanding full payment while the government wanted to pay in two instalments.
The Ministry of Education said the verified amount by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) was Ksh 7.76 billion, while lecturers are demanding Ksh 7.94 billion.
However, UASU secretary general Dr. Constantine Wasonga promised to convene a meeting with union leaders within 48 hours to reconsider their stance.

Speaking while in Parliament, Wasonga said there’s a stark contrast to how government representative, the Inter-Public Universities Councils’ Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) treats university staff.
“The way IPUCCF manages university staff is perfunctory,” Wasonga said.
“If you can see the way lecturers came out of strike, those are people who could go up to January. But because of your chairmanship, because of the honourable members that have talked to us, I’m going to plead with our members so that we can reconsider,” he added
